Bay Springs Baptist Church

Bay Springs Baptist Church
Bay Springs Mississippi
The Bay Springs Baptist Church had long desired a more spacious and welcoming entrance to their sanctuary which they hoped would include a ramp providing access to elderly members of the congregation. Working as project architects with The Chris Risher Studio, WFT Architects incorporated a new Narthex and entrance courtyard.

The project provided an opportunity to design a new front for the church, one that would not only help beautify the building, but would also help define the church’s identity within the community. The new Narthex provided much needed circulation space as well as an audio equipment room and storage. In keeping with the building’s original classical revival design, a Greek temple front portico with Doric columns defines the new entrance. Atop the gabled Narthex roof sits a new steeple holding a bronze sculpture. The new entrance courtyard serves to hide the long ramp from view while defining some of the outdoor space around the Narthex. Within the courtyard, a bell house holds the church’s original bronze bell.
